I had a good nest finding day today in my local patch in Annandale,
Virginia; all accidental.
I normally do not see any Cedar Waxwings in the summer, as they usually
retreat to higher elevations for breeding; but reports of summer breeding
in Northern Virginia have been increasing in recent years. For the first
time today, I found a pair of Cedar Waxwings building a nest in my local
patch. It is about 50 feet up a sycamore. Location: right in the thick of
the intersection of the Capital Beltway (I-495) and Little River Turnpike
(Va route 236), with a constant roar of traffic.
This location also has a pair of Eastern Kingbirds which are presumably
breeding, though I have not found their nest. But i did find one elsewhere
today: in a tree right on the edge of Lake Braddock, Burke, Va., which is
also in my local patch.
