Hey all, I checked the James River from the Lion's Bridge of Mariner's Museum
Park in Newport News this morning around 10am. A nice variety of waterfowl was
present, although numbers of Goldeneye and Canvasback were down from the winter
high counts. As reported by others, Horned Grebes are getting into breeding
plumage and a couple colorful birds were present just offshore, easily within
binocular range. And a nice mixed raft of scaup and Canvasback was also
relatively close, with details easily viewed through a spotting scope. The
complete list is below.
I also wanted to report that the Great Blue Heron rookery on Lake Maury within
the park is in full swing, with around 15 adults at/around nests. Alot of
activity within the woods this morning as well, the highlight being a small
group of 3 Fox Sparrows and a Red-breasted Nuthatch.
