VA BIRDers,
About a dozen members of the Northern Virginia Bird Club assembled at the VC
parking lot near 8 am under overcast skies, 40F and a slight wind which
picked up considerably about 90 min. later giving all a first taste of
"seasonal weather". We birded the trail to the boardwalk and then completed
the loop. Highlight species was a Virginia Rail which called once from deep
in cattails. We also encountered 2 Fox Sparrows near the parking lot in
stick pile. The ducks were still out in the marsh, winter sparrows were
present and a Hermit Thrush posed for all to see on the backside return
loop. We tallied up in the parking lot and during subsequent conversations
added Black Vulture, Pileated WP and Cedar Waxwings to the day list; below
is the list of the 44 species observed.
