I was very surprised to see a Northern Harrier today while out birding (mostly
at higher elevations in Bedford County, e.g., Rocky Mountain Rd, James River
Visitor Center on BR Parkway, Parkway south to Peaks of Otter, Parker Road,
Spring Hill Lake, and James River above Reusens Dam). Not only did I see this
species which is rare in the Lynchburg area, it was a male Gray Ghost, too!
Nothing else I saw was very unusual although I did see a few FOS birds: SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, PURPLE MARTIN, and CLIFF SWALLOW. And my first PALM WARBLER (which
appeared to be a western subspecies in breeding plumage as it did not have much
yellow underneath) in the Lynchburg area this year. (Lynchburgers: I'm at 112
for local big year competition). Complete list of species follows.
