Like David Young in Reston, I also searched for sedge wren this afternoon
at Waples Mill Park in Oakton where I have seen them in the past at this
time of year. When I saw a surprise early winter wren and a marsh wren and
19 house wrens, I thought I had a chance at all of the VA wrens in one day,
something which I have never seen before. (I have had all except winter
wren on a couple walks at this location before!) But alas, despite very
diligent search, I could find no sedge wrens. Maybe someone will find them
all another day this weekend.
However it was a great walk with other highlights being FOS species:
white-crowned (early) sparrow, white-throat, yellow-rumped warbler, and
yellow-bellied sapsucker. There were also two Lincoln's sparrows and
several swamp sparrows.
Earlier this morning at Flint Hill School in Oakton i had FOY Tennessee
warbler, as well as ruby-crowned kinglets (which were FOS yesterday),
rose-breasted grosbeak, blue-headed vireo, and the following warblers:
palm, pine, parula, bt green, blackpoll, chestnut-sided, yellowthroat,
black-and-white and magnolia.
Here are my two lists of the day
