Twenty-six birders attended the Northern Virginia Bird Club trip to
Occoqauan Bay NWR. We had a very successful morning with 73 species
tallied. Of note were 2 calling king rails, about 30 rusty blackbirds at
the marsh (trying to drown out the calling rails), a pine warbler near the
banding station, two eastern meadowlarks in the grass next to the parking
lot, a couple of common loons, 4 Bonaparte's gulls, and a sizable flock of
turkeys along the entrance road with several displaying males. We heard
several singing fox sparrows and saw a group of 6 white-crowned sparrows.
While waiting in the parking lot prior to the walk a pair of northern
harriers flew by, a male and a female. Here is the complete list:
