VA BIRDers,
It looks like Occ Bay NWR was the place to be! My additions are few: I
started at The Point this morning and found a few highlights - 6 No. Pintail
are hanging on, a remarkable 32 Hooded Mergansers, 3 Horned Grebes, the
first (older) Bald Eagle nest as at least one young eaglet, many Eastern
Phoebes, a single Barn Swallow, 2 GC Kinglets, several Brown Thrashers and
Rusty BBs in the marsh. Sparrows are still pushing through with 50+ each of
Song, White-throated and Junco, plus a dozen Eastern Towhees, half dozen
Field, and 3 Fox.
Other stops were only slightly productive. 20 Wood Ducks at Julie Metz, a
Winter Wren and White-crowned Sparrow plus 13 Greater Yellowlegs on Neabsco
Cr - but the real payoff was 2 Cedar Waxwings - the first I have seen in No.
VA since Feb 24. Veteran's Park still has 20 No. Shovelers and another 15
Greater Yellowlegs. Pohick Park had a Greater Scaup and the Forster's Terns
continue. And the Hunting Creek mudflats off the Stone Bridge near Dyke
Marsh produced a Horned Grebe, a first spring Lesser Black-backed Gull, 12
Bonies, and 3 Caspian Terns.
