Things have picked up at the banding station at Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince
William County. On Friday we caught and banded an AMERICAN WOODCOCK - a
first for the station. Also of note was a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, a first for
the season. Last weekend we banded a BARN SWALLOW, also a first for the
station. Warblers banded recently include Prairie, Yellow, Magnolia, Common
Yellowthroat, Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, Yellow-rumped, and Blackpoll.
We are still catching a few White-throated Sparrows. These are mainly young
females who tend to winter farther south than most White-throats. A few
Swamp Sparrows are still coming through.
Visitors are welcome at the station which is open on Wednesdays, Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays until about noon. The station will close for the
season on May 23.
Feel free to contact me if you need directions.
