I spent a few hours this morning at Occoquan NWR. September mornings like this
one make it very tempting to
skip the birds and just admire what has to be one of the most attractive little
places in the State at this time of the year.
That said, I got a pleasant surprise from three early-arriving LINCOLN’S
SPARROWS—two of which posed handsomely
in the tree that marks the beginning of the so-called “wildlife drive”. I also
got good looks at several late-in-migration BOBOLINKS
in the same general area. A flight of 10 (mostly) drake WOOD DUCKS was another
highlight.
Warblers were few and far between. Aside from several MAGNOLIA and PALM
WARBLERS,
the best passerines were a female BAY BREASTED WARBLER and a female BTGW.
