Hello, birders.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was one of two definite
migrant species at Sky Meadows State Park today. I
saw it in the late afternoon, flycatching from the top
of a medium sized dead tree at the edge of the Walnut
Grove (open woods N of Contact Station). Its big
head, short tail, habits and habitat almost
immediately gave it away as this species. I watched
this bird for about 15 minutes. Plumage
characteristics that I could clearly see included the
white sides of the rump and the dark vest. The bird
never vocalized.
The other species that was clearly migrating was HOUSE
WREN, with a few seen. I saw and heard 13 RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS in the Walnut Grove as well.
I visited the park to continue to document butterfly
species that occur there for the new butterfly list
that I helped create, this being a good time of year
for these insects. When the fog started to burn off
the butterflies came out in numbers. I also liked
hiking the new Ambassador White House Trail, which
runs through fields and woods from the North Ridge Tr.
to the new stretch of the AT.
