An Olive-sided Flycatcher was briefly present at the Belle Haven marina in a
tree across the road from the restrooms at 8:30 this AM. It was a quick but
diagnostic sighting with two of us observing its white rump tufts while it
perched before it flew off, its flight blocked by trees. (The VA bluebook
indicates an early fall date of August 20, but maybe there are more recent
early
sightings).
Four birders showed up for the Sunday Dyke Marsh walk, and though no leader
was present, we proceeded and compiled a checklist which is listed below.
Cardinals, Carolina Wrens, Goldfinches, and Orioles were most vocal, but others
like Warbling Vireo and Titmice were silent this morning.
Before the walk, I spent fifteen minutes scoping the mudflats at Hunting
Creek finding five shorebird species--Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs,
Killdeer,
Short-billed Dowitcher, and Semi-palmated Sandpiper. Others had reported
seeing Pectorals before I arrived. On Thursday, August 14, I had found a
White-rumped Sandpiper there as well, but could not relocate it this AM.
