[Va-bird] PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS - Redwing Park, VA Beach , 4/12/09

I'm spending the weekend in VA Beach near the Aquarium. Before the Aquarium opened at 9, I visited Red Wing Park almost directly across General Booth Blvd.

At the back of the park, a nature trail leads to a cypress swamp/ slough. TONS of Yellow-rumped Warblers but the bird of the day was the Prothonotary Warbler -- actually 2. Plus two male and two female Wood Ducks. No sign of ducklings.

Full list is below. Winds suppressed the woodland birds. Numbers were low but the quality was high!!

When the aquarium opened I visited their aviary but can't count the turkey on my year list. The marsh trail between the two exhibit buildings was almost devoid of birds, except the local trash bird -- Boat-tailed Grackles. High tide and boats with fisher people also served to suppress the birds. Not even a Great Blue Heron.

Maybe I'll try later today when low tide is around 4.
