I birded Cockpit Pt. Rd and Leesylvania State Park this morning, mostly with
Kurt Gaskill, who I ran into on Cockpit Pt. Rd. It was a gorgeous morning,
with a good number of migrants about. Highlights were alder flycatcher
(calling at the beginning of Cockpit Pt. Rd.), rose-breasted grosbeak, 19
warbler species, including 2 bay-breasted, 3 blackburnian, 2 canada,
black-throated blue, 3 magnolia, 15 blackpoll, worm-eating, and northern
waterthrush, a very late blue-headed vireo, broad-winged hawk, and summer
tanager. A single coot was swimming in Quantico Creek. At Leesylvania we
walked part of the Powell's Creek trail for thrushes, and were quickly rewarded
with about 5 Swainson's and 2 gray-cheeked. I tallied 90 species in all.
