Hello Birders,
Richmond Audubon Society led a field trip to Tangier Island yesterday. We
caught the ferry from Reedville. The middle of the Bay can be good for
Wilson's Storm-Petrels this time of year but we could not find any...
possibly because of the strong NE winds pushing things down the bay... or
maybe because the Bay is real big. Last year we saw them on both the going
and returning boat rides.
On Tangier we rented golf carts and explored as much of the island as we
could in the very limited time given. We tallied 37 species this year
compared to 38 last year. Land birds are remarkably scarce on the island,
but later in the fall might be better for this. Wading birds are abundant
and were often very cooperative. We hoped for more shorebirds but two
years in a row we haven't been able to find many.

We ended our time on the island with a delicious crab cake
sandwich....locally sourced, I'd say.
