Denise:
Ramsey's Draft on Rte 250, west of Staunton, has some of the last old
growth Hemlocks on the East Coast--but more and more are dying each year
because of insects. Some of the trees about 6 miles up the trail are thought
to be unharvested "originals." Why have they lasted? ...because they would be
too difficult to remove from the ravine they are growing in. I have not seen
these trees myself, because my knees will last only 6 or 7 miles at most, and
to get to the old growth, round trip, requires 12-mile knees!

Subject: [va-bird] RFI - VA old growth forest?
I'm on a lark to explore and hike and bird some old growth forests =
(doesn't have to be pine) this month. I'm looking for locations and =
suggestions for the state of VA. Please reply off line at denise_ryan =
at lcv.org -- if you know of good bird activity in that area, please add =
it. No part of VA is too far for me to enjoy. Thanks!
