Ten members of the Lynchburg Bird Club birded at Red Hill Saturday morning,
April 25, 2009. The temperature rose more quickly than expected; it was very
hot walking back up from the river around noon. The heat bothered the birders
but didn’t seem to affect the birds as we continued to see and hear species
even while we ate lunch in the shade near the visitor center. We saw/heard 65
species including:
· four raptors: Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged
Hawk & 1 Red-tailed Hawk – or six raptors counting vultures!
· four vireos: White-eyed, Yellow-throated, Blue-headed, & FOS Red-eyed
· other FOS (at least for me) species: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern
Kingbird, Wood Thrush, Northern Parula, Ovenbird, Summer Tanager, Grasshopper
Sparrow, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, & Baltimore Oriole
· small groups of Blue Jays were seen flying over from south to north
all day – we conservatively estimated that we saw at least 200
· a FOY (for me) Horned Lark
· not as many warblers as expected as we only saw: Northern Parula,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Pine Warbler, Black-and-white
Warbler, Ovenbird, & Common Yellowthroat
