This morning at Sunset Beach, Northampton County, there were 5 Red-breasted
Nuthatches among the reverse migrants, which were:
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 1 juv. - stunning
Red-eyed Vireo 10
Warbling Vireo 1
Philadelphia Vireo 1
Yellow-throated Vireo 1
Northern Parula 45
Black-and-white Warbler 11
American Redstart 70
Prairie Warbler 1-2
Black-throated Blue Warbler 22
Common Yellowthroat 35
Palm Warbler 2 (1 each subspecies, in same bush!)
Northern Waterthrush 1
Magnolia Warbler 9
House Wren 5
Gray Catbird 20
Northern Flicker 50
I am very struck this year by the low numbers of boreal-forest breeders
(Tennessee, Cape May, Bay-breasted, even Blackpoll) - it was said to be a very
cold, rainy summer in Canada, so maybe many of these did not breed? Unusual to
see no Black-throated Greens in this flight. Very unusual about today was the
extent of the reverse migration - redstarts were on the telephone lines along
the Stone Road into Cape Charles, pausing to fly north. Rarely do we see
active reverse migrants north of the harbor here.
