Hello all,
I just had a call from Ron Hughes, VA Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries,
who shared his exciting news that he saw a Red-headed Woodpecker at
Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area this morning.
The Red-headed Woodpecker was seen along the road leading to the north
(1st) entrance to Merrimac Farm off Deepwood Lane in Nokesville. As you
travel up the entrance road, you pass posts from an old gate and then
the road curves slightly, which is where Ron saw the Red-headed
Woodpecker flying across the road from left to right.
Merrimac Farm WMA is open to the public everyday. The PW Conservation
Alliance has a birding tour scheduled for this Sunday, Oct. 25,
beginning at 7:30 a.m. We'll meet at the North Parking lot (1st
entrance), near where the Red-headed Woodpecker was seen, walk an
unmarked trail from upland forest habitats to floodplain wetlands, then
carpool back to the North Parking lot.
For directions to the North Parking Lot at Merrimac Farm WMA, use the
address 14710 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville 20181, on MapQuest (Google map
directions are not correct). We're keeping a bird list for Merrimac Farm
and would appreciate hearing about your bird sightings so we can add
these to the list, which is online at
http://www.pwconserve.org/wildlife/birds/lists/merrimacfarm.htm.
