A late posting to report a Red-necked Grebe from Island 1 of the CBBT, along
with a small number (fewer than 10) Horned Grebes, 15 March in the late
afternoon; I had seen another Red-necked 8 days earlier, at the other end of
the
CBBT. The number of reports of the species this spring seems above average.
A
few small flocks of Long-tailed Ducks are still around, and I was surprised
(15 March) to see an adult male in full summer ('breeding') plumage among the
dozen or so Long-taileds, all in the usual winter plumage, near the tip of the
Island 1 jetty. In going back through my notes, I don't find any previous
record of this plumage, so I think it's the first time I've seen it in the
state. Purple Martins have been back, in small numbers, for a week, and the
first
Northern Rough-winged Swallows, calling and displaying males, returned
yesterday.
