Ralph Wall, two other friends, and I walked along the Potomac for about an hour
and a half this afternoon. The river was almost completely frozen, both up and
down river from the visitor's center. We saw very few of the hundreds of ducks
I had seen there on Friday afternoon. Down by Conn Island and over on the
Maryland side, there was a group of probably 50-75 birds, mostly Ring-necked
ducks, a couple of Pied-billed grebes, and most interestingly, one Canvasback,
and four female, Red-breasted Mergansers.
