Following is the tally from the March 22 Waterfowl Walk at Riverbend Park,
which identified approximately 20 species and included two participants. With
the previous day's rain, the river was running high and fast . . . which
limited the potential diversity of waterfowl. That said, Buffleheads were in
abundance, and cormorants and Great Blue Herons were very much evident. Also
worthy of note were the Tree Swallows skimming the water despite the wind.
This was Riverbend's final Waterfowl Walk of the season. However, beginning on
April 5th the park will offer Friday morning bird walks on the first and third
Fridays of the month, departing at 8:00 from the parking lot of the Nature
Center (not to be confused with the Visitors' Center). Please contact Riverbend
Park on 703-759-9018 to register. Participants should be prepared to walk about
2 miles in comfortable, closed-toed shoes. There likely will be gentle uphill
and downhill stretches on slightly uneven terrain. All those with an interest
in the natural world - beginning or experienced birders - please join us.
