Weather:
Another lovely late summer day along the Blue Ridge. Light variable wind
during the morning shifting to SE by 11am EST. Lots of bright blue sky and
not one cloud, not even a wisp. Persistent haze out to the N to NW and to
the east.
Raptor Observations:
Slow as in S.L.O.W! First bird of the day was a local Turkey Vulture at
9am Only 1! First migrating raptor was a Broad-wing way out over
Shenandoah Valley, maybe all the way to Verona, at 9:29. Nothing flying,
except for a couple of local vultures during last 1 1/2 hours!
Non-raptor Observations:
At least four Ruby-throated Hummingbirds challenging each other to stake
claim to the feeder provided fun entertainment. Non-raptor migrants
included 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, 1 Red-headed Woodpecker, 22 Tree
Swallow, 26 Chimney Swift and 2 Monarch Butterflies. There was a lovely
Buckeye Butterfly feeding on the nearby Goldenrod.
Predictions:
Chance of late date showers.
