The "Rufous"(?) Hummingbird that I reported last week on the ListServe
was banded today (December 6) in Lynchburg by Bruce Peterjohn and it is
indeed a hatching year female Rufous. It was first observed just before
Thanksgiving. Eight of the previous 13 Rufous/Selasphorus wintering
hummingbirds that have appeared in Lynchburg remained at the feeders
until late March or early April. We are hoping that our most recent
visitor will stay at least until December 19 (our Christmas Count Day).
