A resident on Chincoteague has a "captive" sandhill crane (and other domestic
birds). After seeing a crane on the Refuge earlier this year during one of our
shorebird counts I called him and asked if his crane was on the move, and he
said that the crane periodically flies over to the Refuge. Apparently, the
crane has become restless after loosing its mate during Hurricane Sandy. This
should be kept in mind if you see a single crane flying around the Refuge or
low over the Bay. Joelle Buffa
