Today visited Pocosin Fire Road and Cabin, from the parking
area to Pocosin Cabin and beyond to the forest’s edge, before returning to the
Cabin
and side-tracking to the spring. Found a
nice mix of species, although no migrants yet. Seven warblers were: A.
Redstart,
Black-and-white, Canada (2, 1 each M&F), Hooded (3, 2M & 1F), Cerulean
(at least 3), Worm-eating, and Black-throated Green. Other species seen
included Chimney Swift
(five flying over), Veery, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Red-eyed and Blue-headed
Vireos, Least Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-peewee, and Hairy Woodpecker.
FYI: at Big Meadows,
Northern Bobwhite have been heard by me and others over the last several weeks.
I don’t believe they’ve been found there for
at least a few years. Last weekend I was
treated to a sighting, which was a really nice surprise. It was around 1 PM,
they hadn’t been calling
but were found skulking near the meadow’s edge just south of Rapidan Fire Road
before sneaking off into a bed of ferns in the forest.
