I spent a lovely 3 hours this morning, mostly on the Paw Paw trail at
Shenandoah River ("Andy Guest") State Park. The highlight for me was
the banding station. The chief ranger there, a hard-working guy,
showed me his 15 mist nets and 3 intrepid volunteers, and I saw netted
Field and Song Sparrows, Bluebird, Tree Swallow, and Red-Bellied
Woodpecker. The latter captive put on the longest, loudest vocal act
I've ever heard from any woodpecker. He was a highly perturbed woody.
My list of 35 species follows. Other highlights were 3 BALD EAGLES
and at least 6 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, with 4 singing. Several rather
odd misses, including W-B Nuthatches and Juncos.
