Yesterday I spent the day birding my usual spots in upper King William County
and Walkerton in King and Queen County. Despite the scattered rain it was a fun
day with several new species for the year including 1 spotted and 2 solitary
sandpipers, barn swallows, yellow-throated warblers (lots!), black-and-white
warbler, prairie warbler, louisiana waterthrush, parula, and white-eyed vireo.
Other birds of note were more kestrels than usual (13 total, including 5 males
and 1 female on wires over 1 field in King and Queen near Mundy's bridge), a
big flock of 80 chipping sparrows in one field at Elsing Green, blue-winged
teals in two locations, more than the usual number of yellowlegs (60 greater
and 16 lesser), a few lingering ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, and gadwalls,
only male wood ducks (are the females on eggs?), and my first screech owl for
my Beulahville property which was making an alarm call as it flew over the
oxbow pond a few yards ahead
of a barred owl. After sunset I heard a gobbling turkey, squealing wood ducks,
2 great-horned owls, and 2 barred owls, along with carpenter frogs, pickerel
frogs, leopard frogs, and spring peepers under lavendar clouds. A nice
Easter-eve.
