VA Birders,
Betty Kilgore, Jane Grawe, and I drove out to Rectortown (north of
Marshall), Fauquier Co., this afternoon to look for the SHORT-EARED OWLS &
NORTHERN
HARRIERS originally reported there by Todd Day. We were not disappointed.
We arrived a little after 4:30 pm, and we watched at least 6 NORTHERN HARRIERS
in the field before the SHORT-EARED OWLS made an appearance. We saw the first
owl about 5:15 pm, and 2 more, for a total of 3, flew in shortly thereafter.
NOTE: I appreciated the kind comments I received after I put directions to
the owls on VA-Bird when we first saw them on Dec. 27, 2005. However, Todd Day
is the one who really deserves our thanks, because he is the one who found
and reported these birds, I think in late November. The directions I gave were
pretty much the same as his, with just a few refinements. So thank you Todd,
and keep up the good work!
Good birding in 2006,
