I led a group of Prince William Master Naturalist students around Silver Lake
Park in Haymarket this morning. It was a gray morning, but we were still
successful in finding some interesting birds. We tallied 42 species as we
found several pockets of avian activity in different areas of the park. We saw
six warbler species including Prairie, Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Common
Yellowthroat. Black and White and American Redstart. A White-eyed Vireo put on
a good show as it danced around the bare branches of a small tree right in
front of us. We also enjoyed seeing all three mimids together near the horse
pasture as Mockingbirds, Catbirds and a Brown Thrasher actively foraged. We
also saw a Monarch butterfly, which is always encouraging.
