I made a couple of stops around Fairfax County this afternoon. At Pohick Bay
there were a total of six Red Necked Grebes. Five of them were around the Fire
Boat Dock and another was south of the kayak launch. There were also red
breasted and hooded mergansers, lesser scaup and a large flock of ring necked
ducks.
I then went to Huntley Meadows to look for Rusty Blackbirds along the hike and
bike trail. I struck out at the first three spots I looked -- But found a
flock of 23 in the marsh and woods that are off and informal trail that heads
east from the hike and bike trail. They were at times interacting with a large
(100-150 bird) flock of Red Winged Blackbirds.
