The monthly bird walk at Sky Meadows SP was attended by 8 people. This month's
walk was co-organized by VA state parks, ANSV, and the NVBC. Birding was a bit
slow but we still managed to tally close to 50 species, although many were only
heard.

As always the Red-headed woodpeckers were around and we saw several visiting
nesting cavities. The Eastern Wood Pewees were vocal most the trip as well as
the Scarlet Tanager. The latter we only heard but we could not find the
brightly colored bird in the dense green foliage. Warblers were low in numbers
but we found a female Blackpoll Warbler, enjoyed several Common yellow-throats
and we heard a Northern Waterthrush as well as a Pine Warbler. Like the pewees,
several sparrows were very vocal including Chipping, Field and a surprise
Grasshopper Sparrow. The latter is not the most common bird to find at Sky
Meadows.

Common Ravens actually outnumbered the crows on this trip. Just prior to the
trip I and several others saw about 8 ravens on the road just past the entrance
station. Several Ravens were flying around during the trip and only toward the
end we saw a few crows.
