Yesterday morning while monitoring the bluebird trail at the Dulles
Wetlands, I observed the following:
Green Heron - I thought they'd be back in force by now, but I saw only 1
Blue-winged Teal - 5 M, 8 F
Green-winged Teal - pair
Bald Eagle - the pair of adults perched together in a large dead tree most
of the time I was there. I expected them to be more attentive to the new
hatchling I saw in the nest on 4/3, unless it would have fledged already??
I looked in vain for the nest; I've never known it to be totally obscured by
leaves before, from all angles.
Greater Yellowlegs - saw 1, thought I heard more
Solitary Sandpiper - at least 8
Spotted Sandpiper - 2
Common Snipe - 11
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - heard my FOS
E. Wood-Pewee - second of season; they're back somewhat early
E. Kingbird - my FOS
Cedar Waxwing - 5
Yellow Warbler - 3; my FOS
Prairie Warbler - 3 different individuals (confirmed) along the 3/4 mile or
so of road frontage!
Indigo Bunting - heard my FOS
Orchard Oriole - they're back in force - at least 5 singing males; they were
scarce here last year.
Today I heard a Blackpoll Warbler in Purcellville - my earliest record here
by 3 days.
