To all,
At 4:05 today I was watching the birds at my feeder through my bedroom
window. I have been watching the Sparrows and Juncos at my feeder the past
few days with keen interest. Today I spotted an unusual sparrow. It was
larger than the Juncos and the other sparrows.This sparrow had much more red
and was streaked more heavily than the Song Sparrow. I began to think Fox
Sparrow but because I have never seen one I questioned myself and observed
it through my scope and my field guide. The field guide showed a larger
sparrow than the Song, White-throated, and Slate-colored Junco. Same as what
I was observing. The features that caught my eye the most was the gray nape
and upper back and square tail. I saw these marks on the bird foraging at
the feeder and concluded it to be a Fox Sparrow. Song Sparrow,
White-throated Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco were present at different times:
these times occasionally overlapped and I could observe the difference
between sparrow and sparrow.
