Birded the Stone Bridge just south of Alexandria this afternoon.
Saw two bald eagles out in the river, perched. One was a 3rd year juvenile,
just getting the white head. The other was a full adult that was perched on
what looked like a dumpster out in the river. The adult kept reaching down
into the dumpster, presumably picking at something.
Also saw about six great blue herons, lots of cormorants and Canada geese.
Two pied bill grebes, a mallard hybrid and a ring-necked duck were feeding
together for quite a while near a large group of geese. They moved together
as a group. Saw one of the grebes come up from a dive with a fish.
On the western, inland side of the bridge were an even dozen great egrets,
five or six yellowlegs that I believe were "greater" due to the upturned
beak and the impression of larger size that I got (they were near some
mallards). Also three northern shovelers were sleeping--I got a peak at the
massive bills when they shifted position.
Tons of gulls and terns, but I'm really bad with those!
