There are still four spaces open to all comers on the Northern Virginia Bird
Club boat trip at the Patuxent River Park on Sat. Sept 20. This portion of
the Patuxent, known as Jugg Bay, was historically one of the main staging
areas for migrating Soras. This habitat was all but lost to exotic
invavasive plant species and the depredations of Canada Geese. The park
naturalist Greg Kerns has managed to restore large areas of Jugg Bay
including replanting the wild rice that the Soras depend upon. It is one of
the best conservation success stories in our area. The trip is a morning
cruise on a very comfortable pontoon boat through the marshes. Nothing to
do with birds is ever guaranteed, but each year we have done this trip we
have seen multiple rails. We will also be in areas that offer a good chance
of passerine fall migrants. Please let me know by Friday morning if you
