VA BIRDers,
After Dulles, Marc and I drove to Sully Woodlands to try for the shrike,
arriving a bit after 1pm. No Northern Shrike for us. Most notable sightings
were Savannah Sparrows and Sharpie and Coop.
We next went to UOSA - arriving to a completely unfrozen pond after 2pm.
Filled with mergansers - over 400 Commons, 200+ Hoodeds and single
Red-breasted. 3 2nd/3rd year Bald Eagles were angling for a merganser meal,
making for a great show. A few other waterfowl were present, like
Pied-billed Grebes, Gadwall and Coot. Yet, the most notable was a Wood
Duck, not trivial to find in Northern Virginia after our deep freeze!
