Hi,
I observed a pair of Grasshopper Sparrows at Sully Woodlands in the
Chantilly/Centreville area of Fairfax Co. This property is located on Pleasant
Valley Rd., adjacent to Cox Farms and just south of Braddock Rd. I
accidentally flushed a small tailless bird from the meadow in this same area.
I am hoping that it was a recently fledged youngster but I didn't get a good
look at it.
I counted 9 male Prairie Warblers in this park today. One of them perched on a
tree at eye level 6' from me and sang before he resumed foraging.
Near Elklick Woodlands, part of the Sully Woodlands complex and a 1 mile south
on Pleasant Valley Rd., I observed a male Grasshopper Sparrow carrying food.
This was on June 2. This spot is southwest of the 4 way intersection of
right-of-ways. The land there is private land adjacent to the park and is
unfortunately going to be turned into a subdivision. They've already started
clearing vegetation and doing other activities.
There are lots of ticks in the area. The former property doesn't really have
trails so to bird it properly you need to walk through tall grass. Check
yourself afterward!
