A big thanks to Kent and Jason Davis for tipping us off to a swan they
found at the Greenfield wetlands in eastern Charlotte County yesterday
afternoon. Ty Smith and I zipped down there this morning and
immediately heard the swan calling from the back edge of beaver pond
marsh. During our observation, the bird bathed and swam around near the
beaver lodge all while dodging some aggressive Canada Geese.
This is the first Charlotte County record and the third confirmed record
for the southern Piedmont. For those that want to make the journey to this
awesome birding location, be sure to park well off on the side of the road
before reaching the wetland which is located at these coordinates: 37.062,
-78.585. Greenfield Road is gravel and doesn't have much traffic, but those
that do travel it can go quite fast.
