Greetings,
The Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV) sponsored a walk at Thompson
WMA today. Six people joined us on the walk.
The weather wasn't as inviting as we had hoped, but we did get good looks at
most of the birds we encountered.
As we were getting organized in the parking lot, one of our group spotted a
male Scarlet Tanager across the road at the top of a tree. Great looks were had
by all.
We had intermittent showers of short duration and the light wasn't all that
great for the walk. The Trilliums and Yellow Lady Slippers added to the
enjoyment of the morning.
Here is our list:
Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-bellied Woodpecker (H)
Downy Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker (H)
Eastern Wood Peewee
Great Crested Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo (H)
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Wood Thrush--one seen and many heard
American Robin
Gray Catbird
Northern Parula (H)
Cerulean Warbler--good looks of at least two, and several more heard or seen
flitting around the tree tops
American Redstart--took awhile, but they became very active and numerous
Worm Eating Warbler--great looks at one feeding about 75 feet from the trail
Ovenbird (H)
Kentucky Warbler--heard singing and another birder suggested it was higher up
in the trees. And there it was, sitting and singing. Good looks by all.
Scarlet Tanager
Eastern Towhee--both male and female
Northern Cardinal
Rose-breasted Grosbeak--both male and female
Indigo Bunting
Brown-headed Cowbird--unfortunately male and female were seen
Surprising no shows were Hooded Warbler--none even heard singing, and Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers--none seen or heard.
Good birding to all,
Jay and Carol Hadlock
