Tricolored Blackbird in Steep Decline

A comprehensive survey of Tricolored Blackbirds in California has
confirmed that the population of the species has declined nearly 35 percent in
the
last three years.

I would like to suggest that birders become much more proactive regarding
conservation of all species (birds don't live in a vacuum). Often we lose
species simply because farmers and others don't know what they could be
doing just a bit differently when managing land that would be incredibly
helpful to wildlife.
I often see posts here mentioning grassland birds and how the fields will
probably be cut any day, forcing the birds to move on. If birders would
try talking to the owners of the land, explaining what interesting and
useful(!) critters are out there and what could be done to help them if the
owners were so inclined, it could make a world of difference.
It's long past time for all birders to try to help birds instead of just
observing them and expressing hope for successful nesting or despair because
habitat has been destroyed. Otherwise there will soon be very few birds
left to look at.
Sincerely,
Marlene
