Does any one know the neck band number of the trumpeter swan that showed up at
Sky Meadows State Park? The smallest bird of a pair in Clarke County has a
white neck band Z 652. They are at the Clarke County High school retention

Richmond, VA
Calling all Team Wood Thrush Volunteers for April 17th Team Wood Thrush
field trip. We need volunteers to help with the students. We ask that
you bring all the extra field guides, binoculars and scopes that you can
spare on that day, as we will have 100+ students, teachers, parents and
volunteers with us, so we need all the help we can get. Dutch Gap has
about 10 pairs of binocs and some Golden Guides, while Amanda is
creating a TogetherGreen Team Wood Thrush checklist of birds specific to
our field trip. We need you onsite ready to roll by 9:30 am. Amanda
and I will be riding the buses with the students, teachers and parents
to the site and will meet you at approximately 10 am. We will then
split the students into 3 different groups of about 30 each to go on 3
unique hikes that will last approximately 40 minutes each. That will
take approximately 2 hours total. Students will then return to the
lawns around the visitors center to eat lunch. Please remember to bring
your lunch so that you can continue to be with the students for more
informal teaching through the lunch hour. If you wish to stay with us
for the afternoon lessons of the Citie of Henricus historical tour and
the Enviroscape lesson that Mark will lead after lunch, by all means
join in the fun. I will have a more organized itinerary as we get
closer to the date. We are excited that you are joining us for our
first ever Team Wood Thrush field trip to Dutch Gap! There is room for
more volunteers, but you all are the ones that have contacted me to date.

Seven birders came out for a Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Mason Neck
State Park, We also went to the Great Marsh Trail. We had some rain at times,
but it did not hinder us very much. Highlights included a nice selection of
waterfowl including Wood Ducks, Common Mergansers, Greater Scaup, Gadwall, and
Northern Shovelers. There were several Bald Eagle sightings, but no Ospreys
yet. We also saw an Eastern Phoebe, a Tree Swallow, Brown-headed Cowbirds,
Hermit Thrushes, a Winter Wren, and Dark-eyed Juncos. 54 species total.

Our weekly report of the Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Birdwalk has stated
that we use winter hours during December, January and February, suggesting that
we return to summer hours (7AM) beginning in March.? After some thought, I
think we should continue with the 8AM start time at least until Daylight
Savings time (beginning on March 11) sort of gets 'settled in'.? We'll let you
know.? For the time being, then, we will set off at 8AM.

I spent a few hours on the oceanfront in Norfolk this afternoon. The water was
very calm and birds were present in small numbers. I didn't find anything
unusual, but I enjoyed watching several flocks of Red-breasted Mergansers and a
few Common Loons. Double-crested Cormorants were flying into the Little Creek
Inlet shortly before dark, and small flies (reminded me of sand flies, but they
were not biting me) were plentiful at this inlet. A small flock of Bonaparte's
Gulls were hanging around the inlet too.
Common Grackles and Pine Warblers have been very vocal in my neighborhood
during the last few days.

This afternoon, I noticed a large number of Ring-billed Gulls around
Riverside Dr. so I decided to go towards the Riverwalk to check them
out. On the way, Marybelle Fries let me know that a large group of
Scaup were on the river behind Libby Hill or in front of Camilla
Williams Park. I was tickled pink to find not just Scaup but 16
Green-winged Teal, 4 Redheads, 60 or so Scaup (I know I saw Lesser and
thought I picked out Greater as well), a female Red-breasted Merganser, 5
Hooded Mergansers, 12 Bufflehead and 2 Northern Shovelers (plus,
Pied-billed Grebe, Canada Geese and a Double-crested Cormorant). About 5
Tree Swallows were circling as well! I wonder if the storm last night
didn't play a part in this awesome display! Going back in the AM to see
if they are still there!!!! If you are in Danville, the Riverwalk Trail runs
behind businesses on the east end of Riverside Drive. Turn at the light
between Biscuitville and Libby Hill, park in the back and walk east and if the
ducks are still there, you should see them between the trail and Camilla
Williams Park on the other side. I saw the Bufflehead from behind the hotel a
little west of where the other ducks were.

Today was one Awesome Birding Day ! This was most definitely a Swallow-
Tailed Kite Day !
I went to see if I could find some Kites today and wound up seeing some at 3
different Locations ! The one first was, one Kite flying over at The BanBury
Subdivision ,South Daytona. The second sighting much more spectacular were
Kites flying right over the house at the first Kite Nest location from last year
on Dunn Ave, Two Kites,flying and vocalizing, and the third sighting was at
dusk at The RyanWood Subdivision,South Daytona, there could have been 4 -
6 or more Kites flying high and I'm thinking that and it looks like they are
spending the night at Sugar Mill Plantation Gardens nearby ! Real Cool ! How's
that for the first day of 2012 season of seeing some Swallow-Tailed Kites !
