For a month there has periodically been a small falcon on the wires over
the catchment area / culvert in the NE cloverleaf of the 495-123
interchange. Yesterday Phil Kenny and I actually pulled over on the exit
and put binoculars on it to verify it was an American Kestrel (aside: I
would not encourage others to do this). Phil noted that he had also seen it
patrolling the adjacent scrubby areas.
Given the scarcity of AMKE and the ongoing urbanization of the Tysons
Corner area, I thought this was a notable winter resident.
