That study was quite controversial and it’s estimates are not widely
accepted. The morphology method used, in particular, is a bit bogus. The
work didn’t recognize or name 18,000 species, rather it speculated that
there are 6-8,000 ‘hidden’ species that haven’t been split yet by any
taxonomic authority.

indeed indicate at least 18,000 species. This came a surprise to me too as
I had always heard 10,000 as the approximate number.
