Cary Koronas, Sharon Burton and I were working the Fort Monroe (Hampton)
sector for the Bird Count. We had several late ducks. There was a Ruddy
Duck and Surf Scoter at the Fort Monroe marina. Several Red-breasted
Mergansers and Common Loons were seen along with a Northern Shoveler, a
pair of Gadwalls and four Buffleheads in Mill Creek. We also had a "less
than desired" view of a likely Gull-billed Tern flying away from us. And
in spite of all of the waterfront in the sector, our only shorebird was
a Killdeer flyover at Woodland cemetery. Fort Monroe proper was crowded
with a craft bizarre and boy scout rally so birds were sparse. But at
least we had wonderful weather.
cheers,
Bryan Barmore

Hey all, Stuart Sweetman and I were covering Grandview Sector for Newport News
Spring Bird Count this morning, and around 9am we spotted 7 Am. White Pelicans
soaring over Northend Point. 5 headed south and 2 drifted north. A pretty
nice variety of shorebirds at Northend Point as well including 1 Whimbrel, but
we missed Piping Plover.
