VA BIRDers,
Jay Keller and I spotted the American Bittern at about 8pm this evening in
the inner loop boardwalk area. Also gratifying to see the waterlevels are
going down (perhaps a few weeks too late for early bitterns and King Rails).
Yet Blue-winged Teal, No. Shoveler and American Coots were still present -
plus Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers. A great assembly of Solitary
Sandpipers - hard to estimate the numbers as lots of flying but at least 7.
Earlier in the morning I visited the Telegraph Rd side of Huntley with
highlight being Blackburnian Warbler singing near the end of the trail in
the northish meadow. This was the 11th warbler species that morning for me
on that side of the park. Also present was a Blue Grosbeak in the same
meadow, Blue-headed Vireo nearby, Veery, Swainson's, Hermit & Wood Thrush on
the way down, several Purple Finch in the woodcock meadow and a Warbling
Vireo near the parking lot. Rusty Blackbirds are still around although
difficult to nail down numbers but at least 7 for the day.

Some keen-eyed birders pointed out an American Bittern at Huntley Meadows
this morning around 11:30.
The bird was about 20 yards off on the left of the boardwalk just beyond the
water monitoring system
that was recently installed. It's been a long time since I've seen this
bird at Huntley.
