Nearly four hours birding Chincoteague this afternoon was challenging, with
high wind, harsh light, and flighty birds (flushed by Bald Eagles), but better
shorebirding than yesterday. Highlights of the day were American
Golden-Plover, a
juvenile, and Wilson's Phalarope (and a quick Buff-breasted
Sandpiper), plus extensive
birding with Pocomoke City birder Jennifer Elder, who found the
White-cheeked Pintail and
who birds the refuge almost weekly. She noted that waterfowl numbers
have fallen off
sharply in the days following the passage of Hurricane Earl. I noted
that Green-winged
Teal and Northern Shoveler numbers were lower today. And we observed a
'new' bird, a piebald
(partly leucistic) teal, we felt Blue-winged, on the north side of
Snow Goose Pool.
