I'm sure they are there, since they are not totally gone until 9/1 most
years. I have not gotten down there to count for a variety of reasons since
about 8/14, when there were approximately 25,300. On 8/19 I made a rough
estimate of 15,000--they went in very early and I arrived "late". They will
decline steadily and rapidly after the peak, so I don't know that it is
worth a 2 hour drive this late. Not sure if I will make it there tonight
either, but maybe someone who has been there in the last day or so will
weigh in...

Subject: [Va-bird] Cooper's Hawk, Burke Center VRE, FAIRFAX
There is a small wetlands at the Burke Center VRE station, behind the
Target. This morning a Cooper's Hawk flew through the area, scattered a
small band of pigeons, considered going after the numerous house sparrows
and settled down in the marsh somewhere to reconsider his options. It's the
first time I've seen a hawk there.

PS: Are the purple martins still roosting in Richmond or have they
dispersed ?
