Nice article. Thanks for posting it. I'm the opposite of Mr. Floyd when it
comes to photography, as I lug around a camera with a Canon 100-400mm zoom
lens on tripod. I don't have a sound recorder, but often use the video
capability of my Canon 7D camera to take an "audio-video" of a bird to help
confirm ID or to capture the call when I can't see the bird or see it well
enough to ID.
This has come in handy, such as a white-eyed vireo at Occoquan last year -

bird, which was too far away for a decent photo. And besides, it's a
white-eyed vireo, which usually doesn't sit and pose!
I'll admit the "Vee En Eighty One Hundred Pee See" is a lot easier to carry
around than my camera gear. Maybe I'll get one.

I use a Sony digital recorder myself to keep track of what I see and also
for counts, which I transcribe later for entry into eBird. I haven't made
much use of recording the birds themselves although I can often hear them in
the background when I transcribe. Note- you will need to turn the volume
all the way up on your computer in order to hear a lot of these.
As VARCOM Secretary, I have recently received a couple of reports of "heard
only" birds - using a device like this in the field could be really helpful
in substantiating the record.
