Ted Floyd (our guest speaker at the 2010 Farmville VSO Annual Meeting) has
written an excellent article - see

I use a Sony digital recorder myself to keep track of what I see and also for
counts, which I transcribe later for entry into eBird. I haven't made much use
of recording the birds themselves although I can often hear them in the
background when I transcribe. Note- you will need to turn the volume all the
way up on your computer in order to hear a lot of these.
As VARCOM Secretary, I have recently received a couple of reports of "heard
only" birds - using a device like this in the field could be really helpful in
substantiating the record.
