Although I was totally unaware of the earthquake while in the car driving back
from birding in Southside Virginia, my husband was here at our house in
Powhatan, which is 27 miles SE of the epicenter. I asked him if our two house
rabbits were acting strange and he didn't notice anything, he said he was too
scared to pay attention to them!

remember that after the tsunami in South Asia it was reported that animals in
ities didn't seem to behave any differently - possibly because of too much
oise pollution. But in rural areas it was reported that wild animals moved
oward higher ground and domestic animals were distressed.
t would be interesting if Virginia birders noted different behavior from their
omestic animals and/or wild animals before/during the earthquake.

Very surprisingly, to us at least, my wife reported that during the earthquake,
he birds at our feeder in Fairfax city went about their business (napping,
ating etc.) completely unperturbed. So, no unusual activity at all.
The reason I am reporting this to the listserv is because I am aware that some
esearchers are always interested in finding a correlation (or the absence of
orrelation) between animal behavior and incidents such as earthquakes.
